A source close to the foreign ministry says that more than ten allied heads of state are likely to attend President-elect Tsai Ing-wen’s inauguration.
The unnamed source said Wednesday that Swaziland’s King Mswati III will be in attendance. However, the source said that it is still unclear whether the heads of state of Taiwan’s two other African allies, Burkina Faso and Sao Tome and Principe will attend.
Burkina Faso has just emerged from a period of political turmoil and has only recently held a presidential election. Meanwhile, Sao Tome and Principe has two heads of state, a president and a prime minister, neither of whom has confirmed their attendance.
The news follows the foreign ministry’s announcement that the heads of state of six Pacific allies will also be at the inauguration ceremony. President-elect Tsai Ing-wen is set to be sworn in on May 20.
