Ma hopes for progress towards Taiwan-EU investment agreement
Ma meets with European dignitaries

President Ma Ying-jeou says he hopes to see Taiwan and the European Union make progress towards a bilateral investment agreement. Ma was speaking to a visiting delegation from the European Parliament on Thursday.

Ma extended his condolences over the recent terror attacks in Brussels, where one of the Parliament’s meeting places is located. He also thanked the Parliament for a series of resolutions supporting Taiwan and its efforts to participate in the international community.

These include resolutions in support of Taiwan’s inclusion in the International Civil Aviation Organization and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Other measures include giving Taiwanese passport holders visa-free access to EU member countries.

Ma also said he hopes to see new developments towards a Taiwan-EU investment agreement. Hope for an agreement comes after the EU announced last October that it will consider opening talks on investment with Taiwan. He said he hopes that the Taiwan-EU investment agreement will complement the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement between Taiwan and Mainland China.
