KMT Chairwoman calls for unity among party lawmakers
KMT Chairwoman Hung Hsiu-chu

Kuomintang (KMT) Chairwoman Hung Hsiu-chu is calling on the party’s lawmakers to stand in unity and exercise their power in the legislature. She made the call on Friday during a KMT meeting.

Earlier this year the KMT lost its majority in the legislature to the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

With just 35 of the legislature’s 113 seats, Hung said the KMT must do a good job when it comes to checks and balances. She also said the party must demonstrate its ability to push its political agenda, especially when the DPP tries to pass controversial laws.

“We are not opposing [laws] for the sake of opposing them, nor do we want to create a situation where there are no winners. [We] need to make our viewpoints and our positions clear to society," said Hung.

Hung said that KMT-affiliated think tanks will offer assistance to lawmakers. She also said the party must work with local city and county councils to strengthen the base.

Hung was elected KMT chairwoman in late March, making her the first female leader in the party’s history. She served as vice president of Taiwan’s legislature from 2012 to 2016.
