Ma administration reaffirms China policy
Presidential Office spokeswoman Ma Wei-kuo

Presidential Office spokeswoman Ma Wei-kuo has reaffirmed Taiwan’s China policy. She was speaking on Friday, a day after Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Barack Obama met on the sidelines of a nuclear summit in Washington.

The spokeswoman said that Taiwan’s government will stick to its policy of “no unification, no independence, and no use of force”, and it will promote cross-strait peace based on the “1992 Consensus.” The “1992 Consensus” refers to a tacit agreement the two sides reached in 1992. Under the consensus, each side agrees that there is only one China though each may have its own interpretation of what “one China” means.

The spokeswoman said that President Ma Ying-jeou is pleased with Washington’s acknowledgement of Taiwan’s efforts to promote cross-strait peace over the past eight years. She said stability in the Taiwan Strait has also benefited the United States and the Asia-Pacific region.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister David Lin says Taipei and Washington share the same views on the territorial disputes in the South China Sea.
