First DPP legislature president pushes foreign exchanges
Legislature President

Taiwan’s first legislature president from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) – Su Jia-chyuan – is proactively seeking international exchanges with other legislative bodies around the world. Since taking office two months ago, he has already met with 17 legislative delegations from abroad.

Su came to power following the January elections, which saw the DPP win its first majority in Taiwan’s legislature. He garnered attention this past week when he struck the gavel, marking the passage of the first law since taking office.

When taking office, Su pledged to bump up foreign exchanges with other world legislative bodies. He said he was hoping to both learn from them and share Taiwan’s democratic experience, while at the same time boosting Taiwan’s visibility on the international stage.

Su said that in the future both he and the legislature’s vice president will take the lead in foreign exchanges. He added that the lawmakers also represent Taiwan as legislative ambassadors.
