NGO to hold sit-in to show support for death penalty

An NGO called the White Rose Social Care Association is set to hold a sit-in this coming Sunday to say no to the abolition of the death penalty.

The call came following the gruesome killing of a four-year-old girl, who was beheaded by her attacker last Monday.

While there have been growing calls from human rights groups to end the death penalty in recent years, the majority of Taiwanese people support it.

The association’s head, Eva Liang, said Monday that Taiwan is not ready to abolish capital punishment because those who are sentenced to life in prison can be released on parole after 25 years.

“First, a life sentence is not really for life, because prisoners can be released on parole," said Liang.

"Second, does Taiwan have the right environment to reform and educate perpetrators? Tell us the reason for abolishing the death penalty and respond [to our] question by giving us statistics and concrete [reforms and education] plans," she said. "In today’s Taiwan, there really is no room for discussion when it comes to the abolition of the death penalty, no room at all.”
