Ma to visit Pengjia Islet

President Ma Ying-jeou is set to visit Pengjia Islet on Saturday.

The islet is located in the East China Sea to the north of Taiwan. It is close to the disputed Diaoyutai Islands, which are administered by Japan but claimed by Taiwan and Mainland China.

Ma’s visit will include an inspection of local facilities such as the islet’s weather station and lighthouse. The visit will culminate in the unveiling of a commemorative monument dedicated to Ma’s East China Sea Peace Initiative.

The initiative calls for countries involved in disputes in the East China Sea to set aside their differences and work together to develop resources in the area. However, the peace initiative does not involve any compromises on the issue of sovereignty.

The unveiling will come just one day short of the third anniversary of a landmark fisheries agreement between Taiwan and Japan.
