Taiwan hopes to sign investment agreement with EU

President Ma Ying-jeou says that Taiwan hopes to sign a bilateral investment agreement with the European Union (EU). Ma was speaking Friday during a meeting with a German parliamentary delegation.

Ma said the agreement will be mutually beneficial, as Taiwan is the EU’s seventh largest trading partner in Asia and the EU is Taiwan’s fifth largest trading partner.

The president also said the government referred to Germany’s “Industry 4.0” policy when introducing the industry-boosting “Productivity 4.0” plan last year.

Ma said that Taiwan has been pushing for trade liberalization. Taiwan has signed an investment agreement with Japan, an economic cooperation agreement with Singapore and New Zealand, and a trade pact with China.

The president said that Taiwan and the Unites States have also resumed trade negotiations under the framework of the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA).
