Premier Chang San-cheng says he has confidence in his successor Lin Chuan’s ability to run the government.

Chang is set to step down on May 20, when president-elect Tsai Ing-wen and her Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) take office.

Chang and Lin met Friday at the Cabinet building. Chang said he has been serving the government for four years and so is well aware of the challenges his successor faces.

“Lin Chuan is brave to take on the responsibility of the premiership, as it is a very hard [job]," said Chang.

"But given his ability and with assistance from his staff, I believe that there won’t be any problems. On May 20, I will be an ordinary citizen. As an ordinary citizen, I will give the Cabinet my best wishes and highest hopes [for its success].”

In response to the outgoing premier’s comments, incoming Premier Lin Chuan promised to work hard and not disappoint the public.
