President Ma Ying-jeou says he hopes that Foxconn’s takeover of Japanese electronics giant Sharp will usher in a new era of business cooperation with Japan. Ma was speaking Monday during a meeting with Mitsuo Ohashi, chairman of Japan’s Interchange Association.
Ma was referring to Foxconn’s acquisition of Sharp in early April. The acquisition allows Foxconn to hold 66% of Sharp’s stock. Foxconn, the world’s largest contract manufacturer, is also known by its parent company’s name, Hon Hai.
Ma said that Japan is Taiwan’s third largest trading partner and one of its major sources of technologies. He spoke about the importance of the takeover.
"When it comes to the economy particularly, public attention is on Hon Hai’s teaming up with Sharp. It’s cooperation, not just a marriage. We hope that with Sharp’s technology and Hon Hai’s management, we will see a new era in bilateral business cooperation," Ma said.
