US Taiwan Caucus officials celebrate 37 years of TRA
US Congress

Members of the US Senate Taiwan Caucus and US Congressional Taiwan Caucus have issued a statement to celebrate the 37th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA).

The TRA allows the US and Taiwan to maintain commercial, cultural, and other unofficial relations. The act took effect in 1979 after the US broke off official diplomatic relations with Taiwan in favor of ties with Beijing.

Co-chairmen of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus James Inhofe and Robert Menendez write in the statement that Taiwan is one of the United States’ most reliable allies in the Asia-Pacific region. They write that the US will continue to support Taiwan in its pursuit of freedom, democracy, and economic prosperity.

They also write that the TRA has played an important role in shaping US policy towards Taiwan and the United States’ long-term strategies in Asia.
