Foreign Minister David Lin says that a group of 31 Taiwanese nationals arrested in Indonesia will not face deportation to China.
Lin was speaking to reporters at the Legislature on Wednesday. Lin’s remark comes amid a row with Beijing over Taiwanese nationals arrested in Kenya and forced to board planes bound for China. Like the Taiwanese nationals arrested in Kenya, the Taiwanese being held in Indonesia are accused of involvement in telecom fraud.
Lin said that the foreign ministry is confident and has good channels of communication with Indonesia.
Meanwhile, Vice Justice Minister Lin Hui-huang says that there are different principles at play in international disputes over jurisdiction in cases such as this. Lin says that Taiwan and China will need to use discussions to settle the dispute over jurisdiction in the case of the Taiwanese nationals deported from Kenya to China.
