The foreign ministry has announced that Vietnam will remove references to China on visas issued to Taiwanese nationals. Vietnamese visas had previously listed Taiwanese nationals as citizens of “China (Taiwan)”. Vietnam does not have official diplomatic ties with Taiwan and follows the one-China policy.
The foreign ministry urged Vietnamese officials to use the term “Taiwan” instead in the wake of violent anti-China riots in Vietnam earlier in the month. Rioters targeted Taiwanese-owned businesses, presumably mistaking them for Mainland Chinese firms.
The foreign ministry says that after negotiations, Vietnamese authorities have agreed to use the term “Taiwan” on visas issued to Taiwanese nationals in the future.
