Premier calls for cross-strait cooperation to fight telecom fraud
Premier Chang

Premier Chang San-cheng held a meeting on Sunday to discuss the Taiwanese nationals who have been accused of telecom fraud overseas. That’s after suspects were taken into custody in Kenya and Malaysia, accused of having scammed people in China.

Kenya recently deported 45 Taiwanese nationals accused of telecom fraud to China. Malaysia has deported 20 Taiwanese suspects back to Taiwan. The 20 suspects were later released due to insufficient evidence.

Cabinet spokesman Sun Lih-chyun said Sunday that other suspects have been taken into custody in Indonesia, Egypt and South Korea.

Sunday’s meeting in Taiwan brought together officials from the ministries of justice, foreign affairs, and the interior, as well as from the Mainland Affairs Council, which oversees the nation’s China policy.

Sun said that the justice ministry will lead a delegation to China to discuss the issue directly with Chinese officials. The group is expected to set off on Tuesday. The spokesman said the justice ministry and the Criminal Investigation Bureau will continue to seek evidence from Chinese officials, in the hopes that an investigation can get underway as soon as possible. Sun said that the premier has also ordered an assessment and review of Taiwan’s current anti-fraud laws.
