Taiwan set up its 9th legislative cross-party association on international human rights on Tuesday. It will be led by Legislative President Su Jia-chyuan who will be honorary president and Democratic Progressive Party legislator Yu Mei-nu who will be the association’s president.
Secretary General of the Legislature, Lin Chih-chia said that democratic freedom is a universal value. Taiwan began respecting international human rights after martial law was lifted. The Legislature’s move to nationalize two conventions on human rights was also an important milestone for Taiwan.
Lin said the Legislature will continue to focus on protecting human rights.
Lin said, “The Legislature is a body that gathers public opinion. If we care about Taiwan, we should continue to push for the legislation of more progressive human rights laws. I believe that all Taiwan’s legislators, regardless of which party you belong to, feel the same way and that you are willing to respond by taking proactive steps.”
Director of the French Office in Taipei, Benoît Guidée, said Taiwan is an open society and highly respects human rights.
