A US House of Representatives committee has unanimously passed a resolution reaffirming the Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances. The Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances are the guidelines that form the basis of the informal relationship between Taiwan and the United States.
The resolution was brought up by US Representative Steve Chabot in October 2015. The measure stresses Taiwan’s position as an important partner of the US. It also says that over the past 20 years, Taiwanese people have established a vigorous democracy, and have successfully held five presidential elections and many legislative and local elections.
The measure calls on the US president and the US State Department to openly, actively and continuously uphold the Six Assurances as one of the cornerstones of Taiwan-US relations alongside the Taiwan Relations Act.
