Justice ministry official Chen Wen-chi says that Taiwanese fraud suspects under detention in China are fine.
Chen is the director of the ministry’s Department of International and Cross-Strait Legal Affairs. She was speaking Thursday after visiting the 45 Taiwanese nationals. China seized the suspects from Kenya, where they had been accused of involvement in a telecom fraud ring. Beijing claims it has jurisdiction in the case and was acting within its rights, as most of the fraud ring’s victims were Mainland Chinese.
The delegation was allowed to see the detained Taiwanese through a video link. Chen said that two of the 45 have hired local Chinese lawyers for their defense.
Chen said the Chinese Ministry of Public Security provided the delegation with details of China’s handling of the case and the evidence they have uncovered.
Chen said she hopes that Taiwan and China will continue working together to combat crime.
