Maintaining status quo is DPP cross-strait policy: Party spokesman

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) spokesman Ruan Jhao-syong says that maintaining the status quo is his party’s cross-strait policy. Ruan was responding Thursday to a report by US Center for Strategic and International Studies advisor Bonnie Glaser.

The report is called “Prospects for Cross-Strait Relations as Tsai Ing-wen Assumes the Presidency in Taiwan.” Tsai, the DPP’s chairperson, is set to become president on May 20. According to the report, DPP sources show that Tsai Ing-wen is using both words and actions to reassure Beijing that she will not pursue Taiwan independence.

However, Ruan said that this part of the report is untrue. He said that Tsai has been consistent about her stance on cross-strait relations, namely the need to maintain the cross-strait status quo. Ruan said that this policy is in line with the wishes of the majority of Taiwan’s people.
