Family visits to detained Taiwanese a friendly gesture from Beijing: Premier
Premier Chang San-cheng

Premier Chang San-cheng says that China's decision to allow family visits to 45 detained Taiwanese nationals is a friendly gesture from Beijing. Chang was speaking Saturday.

The 45 Taiwanese nationals were allegedly involved in a telecom fraud ring in Kenya. They were forcibly taken to China in early April for further investigation.

Chang said that “difficulties” prevent the government from bringing the 45 Taiwanese nationals back to Taiwan immediately. But the justice ministry has secured visitation rights for family members after sending a delegation to China. Chang also said that the government will ensure the detainees’ judicial rights when they stand trial in China.

Under a consensus reached between the justice ministry delegation and Chinese authorities Thursday, the two sides have agreed to conduct a joint investigation into the fraud case and map out guidelines for handling cross-border crime.

According to the justice ministry, the 45 detainees remain in good condition.
