Taiwan’s annual military exercises, the Han Kuang drills, began on Monday and will last for 5 days and 4 nights. As Commander-in-chief, President Ma Ying-jeou went to the defense ministry on Tuesday to watch over the exercises.
Defense officials briefed the president on the drills and Taiwan’s defensive capabilities. President Ma Ying-jeou also spoke to the soldiers involved with the exercise.
Military spokesman Luo Shao-ho said the Han Kuang 32 drills are focused on computer-aided war games this week. The annual drills will be held in three parts this year. Two sets of live-fire drills will be staged in August and October. The August drill will feature live ammunition exercises while the October exercises will focus on field confrontation exercises between the three branches of the military. Through a simulation of various Chinese attack scenarios, the drills test the military’s combat capabilities.
