President-elect Tsai Ing-wen has reiterated her policy of maintaining the cross-strait status quo at a briefing on cross-strait ties held Wednesday.
The briefing took place at the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), the top government organization charting Taiwan’s China policy in the absence of official relations between the two sides. It comes less than a month before Tsai’s inauguration.
Later on Wednesday, Alex Huang, director of news and information for Tsai’s Democratic Progressive Party, spoke to the media about the briefing.
"She advocates maintaining the status quo. The biggest difference with the past eight years is that the future promotion of cross-strait relations will have to be based on democratic principles and general public opinion while surpassing partisan views. This is the only way to make cross-strait relations durable. Maintaining the status quo is what’s really important," Huang said.
According to Huang, Tsai told officials at the briefing that she will build a consistent, predictable, and sustainable cross-strait policy.
