The Cabinet has approved a draft amendment to a law that will allow the sale of alcohol online. The amendment will have to be sent to the Legislature before it can take effect.

The sale of alcohol online will be subject to strict rules. Deliveries can only be picked up at convenience stores. Alcohol purchased online cannot be delivered directly to homes. Online buyers must register using their ID numbers and pay using a credit card. At delivery, the buyers must also show proof that they are 18 years of age or older.

The draft amendment will also raise fines for selling alcohol to minors from NT$10,000 (US$300) to up to NT$250,000. Violators may be stripped of their business licenses and barred from reopening their business for one year.
