Incoming Vice President Chen Chien-jen says that Taiwan must develop its biotech and biomedicine industries. Chen was speaking via prerecorded video for a technology forum that opened Friday.
Chen said that Taiwan has faced tremendous challenges in developing biotech products. However, he said that Taiwan will be able to overcome the obstacles with the government’s determination, the researchers’ perseverance, and investors’ confidence.
Chen also said that the incoming Democratic Progressive Party-led government plans to map out a biomedicine corridor linking northern, central, and southern Taiwan. He said the corridor will be turned into one of the biggest R&D centers in the Asia-Pacific region.
Chen also said he hopes that the biotech industry will lay the foundation for Taiwan’s future development. He said he hopes Taiwan will follow in the footsteps of Switzerland, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Belgium to become a leader in R&D.
