Air pollution reaches hazardous levels in north, central Taiwan

The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) says that concentrations of fine particulate matter reached "high" and "very high" levels Saturday in northern and central parts of Taiwan.

The EPA tracks concentrations of fine particulate matter smaller than 2.5 micrometers, often called PM 2.5, using a 1-10 index. It said that concentrations around northern and central Taiwan reached 8-10 on the index Saturday, hitting the top of the scale.

The EPA also reported "very high" concentrations of PM 2.5 in other areas, including Tainan in the south, and on the outlying islands of Kinmen and Matsu.

The EPA says that children and the elderly in areas north of Tainan should refrain from outdoor activities. The EPA has advised the members of the public to wear masks if they have to go outdoors.
