Taiwan has no preset position on US pork imports: Tsai

President-elect Tsai Ing-wen says that Taiwan has no "preset position" on imports of US pork. That's the word from incoming Cabinet spokesman Tung Chen-yuan on Saturday.

Imports of US pork and beef are contentious issues in Taiwan. In the US, pork and beef generally contains leanness enhancing drug ractopamine, a highly regulated substance in Taiwan.

According to Tung, Tsai’s administration will achieve its goals through communication and negotiations. Tung said the new government will consider the development of the domestic swine sector, food safety, and international standards, as well as full communication with the public.

Tsai has said that Taiwan will have to make all necessary preparations first. She says the question of whether to open up to US pork imports will depend on the results of future negotiations.
