China’s BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) does not pose a cybersecurity threat to mobile phones in Taiwan. That’s the word from Science and Technology Minister Shyu Jyuo-min on Wednesday.
The science and technology ministry recently sent a cybersecurity risk evaluation to the Legislature. The report details the two-channel communication capability of the Chinese system and its potential threat to phones with GPS chips.
Shyu told the Legislature Wednesday that the system can only connect to strong two-way signals, which most civilian cellphones in Taiwan cannot send. However, several lawmakers urged security officials to come up with strategies to deal with the potential threat of the satellite system on the governmental level.
