President Ma Ying-jeou says that it is important for Taiwan to promote Chinese culture by encouraging the study of the Chinese language abroad.
He was speaking Wednesday at the launch of a new Chinese textbook for students abroad. Ma said that Chinese-language education is especially important for ethnic Chinese living abroad as a means of passing on their culture to the next generation.
Ma said that Taiwan has made great contributions to the promotion of Chinese culture. He also said that both traditional Chinese characters, which are used in Taiwan, should coexist with Mainland China’s simplified characters.
