Cabinet officials to brief Legislature on Okinotori dispute
Leaving for disputed waters

Foreign Minister David Lin and Deputy Coast Guard Minister Kung Kuang-yu are set to attend a legislative committee hearing on Monday. The Legislature’s Foreign and National Defense Committee has invited Lin and Kung to brief committee members about the ongoing dispute with Japan over the Okinotori Atoll.

Japan seized a Taiwanese fishing boat in disputed waters near the atoll April. Since then, both the foreign ministry and the coast guard have been working to secure the safety of Taiwanese fishermen in the area.

Both ministries have submitted reports on the incident to the Legislature. The foreign ministry is calling for a bilateral system allowing Taiwan and Japan to inform each other in case of similar incidents in the future. The ministry is also calling for the peaceful resolution of disputes. Meanwhile, the coast guard has dispatched a group of vessels to the disputed area on a month-long mission to protect Taiwanese fishing boats.
