Taiwan hoping to hold talks with Japan over fishing disputes

Taiwan is hoping to hold talks with Japan over the latest fishing disputes in the near future. That’s the word from Deputy Foreign Minister Javier Hou on Monday.

Hou was referring to Japan’s seizure of a Taiwanese fishing boat and crew in international waters two weeks ago. The vessel was operating near the Okinotori atoll, which is administered by Japan.

Taiwan’s government says Japan is not entitled to a 200 nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) around the atoll since it does not constitute an island under international law.

Hou said there is no timetable for holding the talks, although both sides have the sincerity in discussing a possible date.

Hou also said Taiwan is hoping to resolve disputes in a peaceful way through bilateral, diplomatic channels.
