On this day in 1908, Mother's Day was observed for the first time in the United States, in Grafton, West Virginia.

On this day in 1966, Mao Zedong launched the 10-year "Cultural Revolution" movement.

On this day in 1994, Nelson Mandela became South Africa's first black president.

On this day in 1996, a mountain climbing team, led by Kao Ming-ho, who suffered serious frostbite, became the first ROC team to reach the 8,848-meter summit of Mount Everest. But that day, a storm also hit Mount Everest, killing eight climbers, including Chen Yu-nan from the Republic of China, in one of the worst disasters since Everest was first conquered in 1953.
