President Ma Ying-jeou has accepted the resignation of Academia Sinica President Wong Chi-huey. That’s the word from Presidential Office spokesman Charles Chen on Tuesday.
Wong is alleged to have been involved in an insider trading scandal. He submitted his resignation as head of Taiwan’s top research institute on March 29.
Ma wrote Wong a letter accepting his resignation. Presidential Office spokesman Chen gave details of the letter.
“In order to uphold the reputation of Academia Sinica and meet public expectations, [President Ma] has agreed to accept President Wong’s resignation submitted on March 29," said Chen. "President Ma immediately retained the three vice presidents and designated Vice President Wang Fan-sen to take Wong’s place until the next president is named.”
Ma said both President-elect Tsai Ing-wen and former Academia Sinica head Lee Yuan-tse have agreed that Wong should resign.
Ma also called for Academia Sinica to quickly draw up a list of candidates so that he or incoming President Tsai can select and appoint the next head of the institute.
