On this day in 1987, the first heart–lung transplant took place in Baltimore. The surgery was performed by Dr. Bruce Reitz of the Stanford University School of Medicine.

On this day in 1997 – Deep Blue, a chess-playing supercomputer, defeated Garry Kasparov in the last game of the rematch, becoming the first computer to beat a world-champion chess player in a classic match format.

On this day in 1998, India conducted three underground atomic tests in Pokhran to include a thermonuclear device.

On this day in 2000, Chechen separatists ambushed Russian paramilitary forces in the Republic of Ingushetia.
