A 5.8 magnitude earthquake rocked parts of Taiwan on Thursday morning.
The earthquake hit at 11:17am local time. The Central Weather Bureau said the epicenter was off the coast of the northeastern county of Yilan.
A man in nearby New Taipei City was reportedly taken to hospital after being hit by falling tiles. There have been no reports of serious damage. Power plants in affected areas, including two nuclear power plants, are all operating normally.
The English-language China Post reports that the earthquake triggered a national earthquake alert system for 4G mobile users for the first time. The system came online earlier in the month.
The earthquake comes just over a week before the new government is set to take office. Incoming Cabinet Spokesperson Tung Cheng-yuan says that incoming Premier Lin Chuan has instructed officials in the new cabinet to assess the situation.
