President Ma Ying-jeou says Taiwan’s space in the international community has undergone positive changes since he took office in 2008. The president was speaking Monday during a training workshop for military officers from Central and South America.
Ma attributed Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Assembly (WHA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) over the past few years to his cross-strait policy.
“Cross-strait relations are at their best in 67 years. Because of improved cross-strait ties, our international relations have also taken a turn for the better. It’s a very valuable virtuous circle; we have already broken free from the vicious cycle of the past," said Ma.
Ma said Taiwan’s health minister has been able to participate in the WHA over the past seven years as an observer under the name “Chinese Taipei.” Ma also said Taiwan has enjoyed the same treatment as other countries and that the island has the right to contact the World Health Organization (WHO) directly without going through a third party.
Ma said his China policy marks a departure from that of his predecessor Chen Shui-bian. Ma, who is set to step down on Friday, is considered more friendly towards China than Chen, whose approach was seen as more aggressive and provocative.
