New “go-south” policy to center on nurturing talent
DPP official James Huang

The new government’s policy of expanding Taiwan’s influence into Southeast Asia will center on nurturing talent. That’s the word from Democratic Progressive Party official James Huang on Tuesday.

Huang said Taiwan is strong in the fields of manufacturing and research. However, he said Taiwan lacks marketing channels and skills. He said the new “go-south” policy will look to turning the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and India into an extension of Taiwan’s domestic market, and also seek to nurture talent. Huang said diplomats should strengthen their language and marketing abilities. He also said Taiwan must step up in the next five years for the country to have an edge in the world.

Huang said the new government also hopes that Southeast Asian countries will come to invest in Taiwan as well.
