The US House of Representatives has passed a resolution reaffirming the Six Assurances as the cornerstone of US-Taiwan relations.

Taiwan’s government first proposed the Six Assurances in 1982 as guidelines for the informal US-Taiwan relationship. The Six Assurances state that the US will sell Taiwan defensive weapons while not intervening in matters regarding Taiwan’s sovereignty or its relationship with China.

Legislature President Su Jia-chyuan responded to the resolution Wednesday, calling it an act of goodwill towards Taiwan.

"Basically, it is [the United States’] announcement of goodwill towards Taiwan to the world. It is a hope that Taiwan’s future government will continue to maintain peace and stability when dealing with other countries, including the US and China," Su said.
