The foreign ministry says delegations from 59 countries will attend Tsai Ing-wen’s inauguration as Taiwan’s president on Friday. Close to 700 guests from overseas will attend, a higher number than for previous inaugurations.
There will be delegations from all of Taiwan’s 22 diplomatic allies, including nine heads of state and government. These include the king of Swaziland; the presidents of Paraguay, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Nauru and Palau; the governor-general of the Solomon Islands, and the prime ministers of Tuvalu and Saint Kitts and Nevis.
Tsai will be sworn in at the Presidential Office in Taipei at 9am Friday. She takes over from Ma Ying-jeou, who has served two four-year terms in office.
