Premier meets with political parties, calls for communication

Premier Lin Chuan met with representatives from Taiwan’s major political parties on Friday. The meetings were in preparation for his upcoming policy report at the legislature next Tuesday.
Lin first gave a speech at the Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) meeting, saying that better communication between parties will help with policy promotion.

“[My] communication is certainly not limited solely to with members of the DPP. I hope to communicate with representatives of all parties. We hope our policies can gain majority support at the Legislature [next Tuesday], that’s the only way that they can go into effect, "said Lin.

Lin also listened to the requests of representatives from the Kuomintang (KMT). Among other things, the KMT is looking to once again cancel traffic charges on state highways during low travel times, keep the ban on the import of US pork with ractopamine, and ensure Taiwanese fishermen’s right to fish in the waters surrounding the Okinotori atoll. Lin responded to the requests saying he understands the public’s concerns and hopes the legislators will be more understanding any possible missteps on the part of the Cabinet.

The New Power Party and People First Party have also raised questions about the minimum wage and nuclear waste disposal. The hope is that Lin can be well prepared ahead of his policy report next Tuesday.
