People should take the helm of building culture: Culture Minister

Culture Minister Cheng Li-chiun says that the people of Taiwan should play the main role when it comes to creating Taiwan’s culture and history. She said the government should play a supporting role.

Cheng was speaking Monday in an interview with Radio Taiwan International. She said that the days of the government creating Taiwan’s culture and history are gone.

“I think we should put Taiwan’s people at the helm of building Taiwanese culture. Why should it be built by the people? Over the past 20 years, we have seen many examples of community building that were successful. The most important part of community building is that it is the residents who are driving the improvements in their communities," said Cheng, "Therefore, when it comes to building Taiwanese culture the people should be the driving force behind that creation. The government’s job is to provide support for those who advance and promote the culture of Taiwan.”

Cheng said that Taiwanese culture should not be one-dimensional. She said that each community can build its own culture, and that it can be presented in the forms of books, movies, anime, food culture, and cultural heritage. She said Taiwan should promote its culture to the world instead of just locally.
