Premier Lin Chuan has called on the Cabinet to stimulate the economy by speeding up implementation of the government’s infrastructure plans.
At a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, Lin said that while the economy showed signs of improvement in April, growth remains sluggish. Lin said that by using infrastructure budgets for the second half of the year, government departments can create demand for investment. He said that this may even help keep Taiwan’s economic growth for the year at 1% or higher.
The National Development Council says that the government has expanded budgets, raising the budget for investment in public infrastructure by 10.7%. The council believes that this increase in public expenditure will help Taiwan’s struggling economy.
