Premier Lin Chuan says the government will continue to ban US pork imports and Japanese food products which may have been exposed to radiation. Lin was speaking Friday during his policy report at the Legislature.
KMT legislators earlier this week boycotted Lin’s policy report after he refused to sign a letter supporting a continued ban on imported US pork that contains ractopamine. The feed additive is a leanness-enhancing drug banned in Taiwan.
Lin said that the government will not lift the ban on US pork without a scientific risk assessment. He said the government will ensure the execution of the Act Governing Food Sanitation and promote local pig farming.
Taiwan also currently bans imports of foods from the area of Japan affected by the 2011 meltdown of the Fukushima nuclear plant. Lin said the government will continue to monitor the place of origin and product category of Japanese food imports.
