Chen’s attendance at dinner broke no rules: Prison

A Taichung Prison official said Sunday that former President Chen Shui-bian's attendance at a dinner in Taipei on Saturday did not violate the provisions of his medical parole.

Chen, who was in office from 2000 to 2008, served more than six years of a 20-year prison term on corruption charges before he was given medical parole in January.

Chen submitted a formal application to the prison last week seeking permission to attend the anniversary celebration of a foundation that he helped establish.

Taichung Prison rejected his application on the grounds that it considered the dinner to be a political event. But it did agree that Chen could meet with old friends in a private venue and without media coverage.

Chen showed up in a VIP room adjacent to the main venue of the dinner hosted by the Ketagalan Foundation for about two hours to receive supporters.

The prison says that Chen did not violate his parole regulations and that it would release a detailed assessment on Monday.
