Taiwan hopes to strengthen ties with the U.S.: Stanley Kao

Taiwan is looking to strengthen ties with the United States in a way that is mutually beneficial. That’s the word from Stanley Kao, Taiwan’s new representative to the US.

Kao arrived in Washington D. C. to assume the position at 3pm on Sunday, local time. The managing director of the American Institute in Taiwan’s (AIT) Washington Office, Joseph Donovan, greeted Kao and his wife at the airport.

AIT is the top US body that oversees exchanges with Taiwan in the absence of official diplomatic relations.

Kao said that the new government led by President Tsai Ing-wen acts and thinks differently from the previous administration. But he said that the Tsai administration also believes that US-Taiwan relations should be long-term and sustainable.

One of Kao’s first responsibilities after taking office will be to facilitate President Tsai’s transit through the United States on her way to Panama. Tsai is set to participate in the official opening of the Panama Canal Expansion, where she will meet with a number of international leaders.
