Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) says it will continue to work on its communication with China. MAC Minister Chang Hsiao Yueh responded on Tuesday to an opposition Kuomintang legislator who asked whether she has made any effort to communicate with Beijing.

Chang admitted that she has not interacted with her Chinese counterpart Zhang Zhijun since taking office but that she will work in that direction.

Chang has also rejected a claim that China is restricting the number of students permitted to study in Taiwan. She said Tuesday that cross-strait educational exchanges are a very positive thing.

Chang said, “We think that so far cross-strait educational exchanges have been very positive. Chinese students studying in Taiwan have the opportunity to learn about our culture and society. At the same time, we get to learn more about China. We welcome Chinese students to come to Taiwan. There has been no change in policy. We hope that education and culture issues will not be linked to politics.”

Chang said both sides of the Taiwan Strait should honor the results of more than 20 years of cross-strait exchanges. Chang said the Taiwan side will work to maintain continuous and stable communication with China.
