Taiwan Power Company will do its best to ensure that the First Nuclear Power Plant is free from safety concerns and reach a consensus with the public on its future plans. That’s the word from the company’s chief engineer Lan Hung-wei. Lan was speaking on Wednesday during an interview.
Lan’s words reflect those of Premier Lin Chuan a day earlier. Lin said there won’t be any assessment on the possibility of reactivating the number one reactor of the First Nuclear Power Plant unless the government has exhausted all other energy options and the public reaches a consensus on the issue. The reactor was shut down for repairs 17 months ago.
When asked about the possibility of an insufficient energy supply during the highly demanding summer months, Lan said there is a chance that the government will periodically limit the public’s power usage. Lan said it largely depends on the climate and the status of other reactors.
Lan said the Taiwan Power Company will do its best to ensure that other reactors run problem-free.
President Tsai Ing-wen’s administration is hoping to decommission all three of Taiwan’s nuclear power plants by 2025. Officials say the reactor in question at the First Nuclear Power Plant is still scheduled to be decommissioned in 2018.
