Foreign Minister David Lee said on Wednesday that Taiwan will not apply to join the United Nations. That’s amid media reports that the government has plans to do so.

Lee also said when President Tsai Ing-wen travels to Panama and Paraguay, she will transit through the US.

Meanwhile, the US has called on Taiwan to ease tensions after Taiwan’s defense minister Feng Shih-kuan said this week that Taiwan would ship 40,000 rounds of ammunition to Taiping Island.

Minister Feng later clarified that he mispoke and meant Pratas Island rather than Taiping Island. Minister Lee clarified the situation to the US.

The presidential office also said that all maritime issues in the South China Sea should abide by international laws. It said Taiwan’s stance on relevant territorial rights all adhere to international maritime laws.
