President Tsai Ing-wen and Premier Lin Chuan have sent congratulations to the new prime minister of Saint Lucia. Allen Chastanet was sworn in on Tuesday as premier of the Caribbean island nation, one of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies.
Chastanet’s United Workers Party won the country’s general election held on Monday, ousting the former Labour Party government.
Saint Lucia and Taiwan resumed diplomatic relations in 2007 after a ten-year break. Last year, Saint Lucia opened an embassy in Taipei, the country’s first embassy in Asia.
