US to follow precedent in arranging Tsai transit: Spokesman

The United States says it will handle an upcoming transit by Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen in the same way it’s handled similar transits in the past. That’s the word from US State Department Spokesperson Mark Toner on Thursday in Washington (local time).

Tsai will pass through the United States during her upcoming visit to two of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies, Panama and Paraguay, in June.

When asked about the US government’s arrangements for Tsai, Toner said the government will ensure Tsai’s safety and dignity during her passage. He said that the United States has always facilitated high-level Taiwanese officials’ passage through the country while at the same time respecting the One-China policy.

Toner did not, however, give any details about plans for Tsai’s time in the United States.
