Military mulls expanding ROTC program to include high schools
Lieutenant General Hsu

The military is considering an expansion of the Reserve Officer’s Training Corp (ROTC) program to include high school students. That’s the word from Lieutenant General Hsu Yen-pu, head of the defense ministry’s personnel department, on Wednesday. Hsu said that the goal of the proposed expansion is to boost recruitment.

The defense ministry’s Reserve Officer’s Training Corp (ROTC) is a part-time basic training program for Taiwanese college students. The program provides participating students with financial aid and the prospect of enrolling in the full officers’ program later on.

Hsu said at the Legislature Wednesday that the military’s recruiting efforts have so far yielded subpar results. Hsu said the ministry will prepare a report on the suggestions to include high school students in the corps.
