President Tsai Ing-wen honored police on National Police Day Wednesday. She presented awards to model police officers and said that every police officer who helps uphold the law is a model police officer.
Tsai encouraged the police force to take pride in their work. "The police force can take pride in helping the people feel secure. As long as you uphold the law and show courage and empathy, people will see you as heroes," said Tsai.
The president also said she wants police to focus on fighting drug abuse and fraud rings. "The people of Taiwan are really concerned about these two crimes," said Tsai. "They hope that we can find new ways to keep Taiwan safe and stable. We can’t just be fooled by the myth of numbers. We need to get to the source of the problems. We have given you these two missions and other government agencies will be there to assist you."
Tsai also said that she will add more personnel to the police force and improve police officers’ work environment and training.
